Yes, Bichons can swim Really well. We have had all our Bichons in Our Swimming Pool. They will swim from one side of the pool to the other. When we get our Bichons close to the water they begin paddling their short legs like crazy. We put them in and they will swim from side to side of the pool.
Many times in the summer we put our dogs in our pool to give them a bath. The bichons Have a very soft white coat, but like all white items, they get dirty easily. We joke and say they look like dirty wash Rags.
But we put them in and let them swim around, then take them out lather them up and then Rinse them down.
Two areas of Caution
- One – we have a set of stairs in one end of our pool so they can paddle over to the stairs and get out of the pool. Being very small dogs if they cannot easily get out. It would be easy to for them to get tired. They are not able to get to an edge and lift themselves up to climb out. They are just too little
- Second – If your pool has a liner it is possible for them to swim to one side or corner and trying to get out, not purposely tear your pool Liner.
Do Bichon Frise Like Water
No, we can’t speak for all bichons. But the dogs we have had over 30 years were very good swimming but we never did see one jump in on their own. We would have to pick them up and carry them into the pool.
They do not seem to be afraid of it but now the type of Dog to just run and jump in on their own. we have had many Bichons, at one time we had 9 Females and one male.
We were having many Litters each Year. It was great because puppies are so enjoyable to have around. Most of our Dogs did not Like Baths. They are small so we would wash them in our sink. So they would try to leave when they could.
How do Bichon Frise swim
In looking at how Bichons swim. Scientist has studied science on how dogs swim. They attached video cameras to the dog’s legs to actually how they were swimming when they did. They Studied 8 different Breeds. They found that when a dog was swimming it was moving it legs at the same pace as if it was trotting on land. They found that all of the dogs they studied swam in the same manner, regardless of Breed.
Even as people start to learn to swim. The first stroke they learn is the Dog Paddle – named after watching dogs swim. Our Bichons swam well, holding their head above the water as they paddled.
It seemed it was a natural reaction because their legs kept stroking as long as they were in the water. Some people have reported that their dogs were able to dive and swim short spurts under the water. These were hunting Dogs.
Bichon Frise Swimming Danger
I wanted to add this Caution. We have known many people who have owned pools, and have experienced a dog drowning in their Pool. When dogs play or go in and out of a point they can swim until they can touch the ground then walk out.
Swimming pools just about all have a ledge that goes completely around the pool. So a dog that falls in, or accidentally Jumps in is unable to get out. Our swimming pool we are constantly finding squirrels, and frogs that have had the same problems.
Can Bichon Frise Dogs Swim Distance
If a dog is not used to swimming. 10 Minutes is about their limit. Dogs can build their stamina to be able to swim for about 30 minutes, with training.
The record in the Guinness Book of World Records has recorded that did a channel swim with a distance of 9.5 Miles it took 6 hours and 23 Minutes. Gypsy and Kai were the two Black Labs that set the record.
Will Bichon Frise Float / Can Dogs Float
